Nail Polish and Wudu

Aug 12, 2021 | Ghusl, Purity, Wudu

Q: Are we allowed to use water-permeable/breathable nail polish and perform wudu and ghusl over it?

The nails need to be washed during wudu and ghusl. Tests show they are not fully permeable, only (maybe) with one coat and excessive nail rubbing during wudu. Therefore, it will not be valid unless a very thin layer is used and each nail is rubbed, which is unlikely to happen. The following article by globally renowned scientist and nail expert Doug Schoon negates the validity of wudu with permeable nail polish: Oct-16-Doug-Schoon-column.pdf

An alternative is to use a nail polish that dyes the nail instead of coating it, such as the ones available here https://www.aishasnailstain.com/

It should be noted that if a woman wears nail polish during the times that she is not praying and then it becomes difficult to remove completely, then this will be overlooked due to necessity and hardship.
